I have very oily eyelids and need a good quality eye primer to keep the eye shadows from creasing, transferring, or melting off. Without these products, my eye makeup will become a big ol’ mess. And no one wants to see that.
The packaging for the Urban Decay Primer Potion in Greed is a twist off cap on a squeeze tube with a small spout/opening. The price is $20 for 11 ml or 0.37 US fl oz. The formula is a creamy eye shadow primer that goes on thick but blends well.
I love this eye shadow primer because it becomes a multipurpose product where I can wear this by itself since it is a beautiful color or as a base for my powder eye shadows. Even when I go overboard and put too much product, it is easy to blend out so it’s just a wash of color. This can also be used as a highlight. It’s shimmery and gold toned, and a little goes a long way.
Here’s a swatch of each.
L: Urban Decay Greed | R: MAC Soft Ochre
The packaging for the MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre is a twist off cap on a glass pot. The price is $21 for 5 g / 0.17 US oz. The formula is a creamy eye shadow primer that goes on thick but blends well and dries down. This long-wearing formula creates seamless coverage almost like a concealer for the eye area.
I use this paint pot more either when I want my eye shadow to last for hours and hours or when I want to wear a brighter eye shadow. It makes the brightly colored eye shadow pop and seem more true to color and last all day. I would not consider this a multipurpose product like the UD primer potion because of its yellow beige shade. I cannot wear this alone as my primer because it will still crease due to its thickness. I do have to prime my eyes and then layer this on top to use it.
Do you use these eye primers? What’s your favorite eye primer?
I haven’t tried either of them before but I do have samples of the UDPP that I haven’t tried out yet! Thanks for reminding me hehe! ๐

You’re welcome! I’m glad I reminded you because I also have samples too — From those Naked palettes. I think there are different shades of primer potion in that sample ๐

I have oily eye lids too…tried many eye shadow primers and find that Nars Smudge Proof eyeshadow base is the best. Have you tried it?xo

I always wonder how we get oily on our eyelids. It’s such a strange place lol I have not tried that, but it always sounded like it was a great eye primer as well. Thanks for the recommendation! I only tried Benefit Stay Don’t Stray and it is good too. But I liked UDPP better.

Ooh I like the look of Greed. Tempted to try it even though I don’t use eyeshadow primer!

You don’t use eyeshadow primer? You are so lucky! If I don’t (and I have tried) it ends up looking creased and nasty lol

I’ve been a long-time UDEPP-original-formula fan. It’s been fun to see these new varieties come out. I’m really interested in Eden. Isn’t it amazing stuff? I haven’t tried MAC’s paint pot yet because I also have very oily lids that are prone to creasing…. UDEPP just does what I need. :o)
Hope your week is going well.

The original is the best! I ran out of it recently so I had to use the colored one instead. Once I finish it up, back to the original! Same here, if you try the Mac paint pot, you still need primer underneath. I only really use it when I want the shadows to really pop. Have a great week ๐

I feel like I’ve tried every primer out there and still need to find a holy grail :)..great post.

You’ll find it! Once you do, you’ll never try another. The only reason I try other eye primers is because i get them as samples in Sephora orders or they come in whatever palette free.

I’m the same – I still need a primer under the MAC Paint Pots or they crease on me. My favourite primer is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

I have yet to try that! I really want to try the Champagne one. It looks so pretty. Good to know that it’s a great primer.

This was interesting to read as I’ve always wondered how the two compare. I use MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre too and just love it. My eye make up does not budge at all! I’ve yet to try the UD one.

Now you have an alternative! It’s great and lightweight compared to the MAC paint pot.

I’m an eye primer whore. I will try them ALL. I have oily lids and most eye shadows will crease on me on their own. I don’t know how I would survive if eye primers weren’t invented!
My all time favourite is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance – but I believe they’ve changed the formula recently so I’m not so sure. I’m currently using up the Prestige Primed & Ready Eye Primer which is very good. Others that also work for me and are in my rotation: Milani Eyeshadow Primer and LORAC Behind the Scene Eye Shadow Primer.
The ones I’ve disliked are Urban Decay Primer Potion (sorry, it’s just very drying), NYX HD Eye Shadow Base, L’Oreal De-crease Eye Shadow Base, and the cult favourite Artdeco Eyeshadow Base. The latter 3 all creased on me.
My method is a thin layer of eye primer, and then a cream eye shadow base (such as the MAC Paint Pot) and then the powder eye shadow. This keeps my eye shadows crease-proof and fade-proof all day!
Told you I’m an eye primer whore! ๐

Haha definitely an eye primer whore! Maybe the formula wasn’t the same? I only find UD drying when it is about to finish. I have the Lorac in my stash because of the Pro Palette and Laura Mercier as well.

If your eyelids are oily, you’ll still need to layer on the UDPP!

I have the MAC ‘Painterly’ Paint Pot and think it’s great at evening out my eyelid color (I’ve got very vainy eye lids…)! Also helps with the staying power of my eyeshadows ๐

Great that it works well alone for you! I would get more colors if it worked on me without having to layer another primer underneath.

Yeah that’s a bit annoying, especially since it is meant to be the perfect eye lid base…

Hi honey! I really like the UDPP,i’ve tried it on a sample that i found inside the naked 3 box and i want absolutely to buy it soon! Great review as always ๐ xoxo

Hi lovely! Thank you ๐ Let me know when you get it! They used to have the wand (doe foot) packaging which I think added to it being a magical primer potion. Now it is just in the squeeze tube pictures in the post. More hygienic at least.

I have the opposite problem and my eyelids dry out alot. If I didn’t use urban decay primer potion my eyeshadow would not have anything to stick to and would be kinda flaky and gross to be honest. It’s literally a life saver!.
