Washing your hair may seem like common sense, but there are some things that still need to be learned when it comes to washing your locks. Remember that the oiliest part of your hair is at the scalp while the driest part is at your ends.
-Soak your hair in warm water. This allows the hair cuticle to open up, making it easier to loosen up any oil, dirt or product left in your hair.
-Apply a dime to quarter sized amount of shampoo into your hand and gently work a lather into your scalp. Remember, shampoo is for your scalp and conditioner is for your ends. You do not need to gather your hair up into a ball on top of your head with the shampoo. Once you’re done massaging your scalp with the shampoo, let the water do the job of getting the shampoo down to your ends. Rinse off.
–Completely squeeze the excess water off of your hair. This allows the next step to go smoothly and absorb well. Apply a dime sized amount of hair conditioner from mid shaft to your ends.
-If you have one, this is the time to take a wide tooth comb and comb out your ends while the conditioner is still in your hair. This prevents breakage and makes it easier when you go to brush your hair later on.
-Once you’re done combing through the ends, rinse off completely.
-If you can, and I barely remember to do this, now is the time to rinse off with cool/cold water to seal the cuticles.
All done! I hope you enjoyed reading. I have been washing my hair like this for a very long time and it works great for me!
How do you wash your hair? Share any of your tips!
So basic and essential but everyone assumes they’re doing it correctly! I do shampoo my ends because of hair products but I do concentrate conditioner at the ends only! 💆🏻

Great post! I have really curly thick hair and even though I try to follow these rules I often slack (more like 95 percent of the time)! This is reinforcement to follow through tonight – especially with the wide toothed comb and cold water!!!!!!

Oh, I had no idea you had thick curly hair! Good to know. I think it’s hard to remember to do all these steps the first time, but once you do it enough, it is worth it! I see a difference in the overall health of my hair. I wouldn’t change a step!

Oh, yes! Very thick and curly, but I straighten it all of the time because it is so unruly haha!!! Whenever I leave it curly it looks good for about an hour and then looks like a hot mess the rest of the day! Tried so many products and nothing works for me!

Even sea salt sprays?!

Oh, yes! Salt Sprays = hot mess express! They get so sticky in my hair!! I want so badly to like them, but haven’t had a great experience! I’ve tried high end ones and drugstore ones!

One thing that does tame my curls a bit better is the macadamia oil, but I’m still never 100 percent happy with how it looks curly. Its like either load it up with product and feel gross or have frizz! Pass the straightener! LOL

LOL so you straighten your hair almost everyday then!?

LOL! If I wear it down I straighten it, but if I put it up I can work with it without a straightener! Usually when I straighten it I can go 3 to 4 days without washing it because my hair is thick – just some minor touch ups with the flat iron! 🙂

I think I’m using too much shampoo and I always ball it up on my head, so I’m going to change these habits and adopt the ones you mention here! Hopefully my hair will feel healthier. Great post! X

No worries, I used to do the same thing! You just need enough shampoo for your entire scalp including the nape area. It will lather up just as much! I hope this helps!

Great tips, I use to thing it wasn’t a big deal to wash your hair whatever way you’re washing it but now as I’m getting older, i’m starting to understand the meaning behind taking care of your hair. So this post is helping me achieving that healthy hair goal 🙂

What a great reminder! I used to do the cold water thing ages ago, but somehow it’s slipped out of my routine.
