Let me preface this review by saying that I prefer lengthening mascaras compared to volumizing ones.
The packaging is a thick yellow tube that can stand up on its own with a fairly big bristle style wand. The price is $7.77 varying by location. The formula is a wet mascara that thickens over time.
My thoughts
I’m not sure if this is the Colossal mascara everyone raves about because I know there are different variations of this line (cat eyes, chaotic, pumped up, go extreme, etc.) This is the volum’express version and I can truly say I am not impressed. Let’s do positives first, shall we? I like how it’s an extremely black mascara that really coats all the lashes giving it the volume it claims. However, does volume just mean clumping together lashes to form bigger lashes? I guess I moved onto the negatives quicker than I thought I would. No matter what mascara I use, I must always curl my lashes (shown in the top half of the photo below.)
I curl them and you see the length of my short lashes. Once I apply the mascara on, they are instantly weighed down. In actuality, there was no point in curling my lashes in the first place if it was going to end up looking how it normally did. This is the first time I actually prefer my curled, untouched lashes. You see and feel the lashes clumping together, and it dried fast enough for me to not be able to salvage any separated lash sections.
I’d say this is good for those who don’t have trouble in the lash department, the ones with naturally curled, long lashes; this would be good for you guys. For me, I’m sad to say it, but this is a bust. Although, I’ll try to use it all up for the sake of my No Buy. Some mascaras do get better with time, and I’m hoping this is one of them.
How do you feel about the Maybelline the Colossal Volum’Express mascara?
I never tried this one, glad you did this review because I’ll probably skip it too!

There are so many other Colossal mascaras, but I thought I had the most hyped one. Maybe not?

I’ve never true any of the Colossal, I didn’t realize there were more than one!

Yea! That’s what confused me because I thought that there was only one that everyone raves about and I’m guessing it ain’t this one!

I tend to like a little bit of clumpiness, so I might actually like this one.

Definitely! I say this is bad for me because I actually want length, but if you have okay to great lashes, this is not a bad mascara at all!

Never tried this – pity it didnt work well for you. Clumping is just horrible!

Agreed! I have hope for when it becomes drier. Maybe the formula will be better. Not sure.

This was actually one of my first ever mascaras, and it was TERRIBLE. Straight out terrible. It had a funky smell that lasted for the whole day, clumped my lashes together, weighed them down, undid the curl, and was sooo messy and difficult to remove. I wish I had my blog when I still had the mascara so I could have reviewed it and you could have avoided spending the money on this mascara >_< You could have bought like two or three donuts with the money spent on this mascara lol. Right now, I use Bad Gal waterproof mascara by Benefit, and it's great!

Lmao I should have bought doughnuts! No worries girl. Thank you for letting me know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t favor this mascara.

I use this mascara at the moment and don’t mind it too much at all. I tend to only use this one for slightly dramatic looks as I find sometimes its a bi too heavy for a daytime look.

You must have good lashes to begin with! 🙂 It is extremely black so I can see how it could be too dramatic.

No problem. If you have great lashes, this mascara is probably what you want.

SO weird because I generally hate Maybelline mascaras and this one was the only one that I actually liked! I tried it a long time ago though, and I remember it had a floral scent to it. It gave me good volume, not too clumpy and didn’t weigh down my lashes. ODD.

Very odd! But they may have changed the formula? I’m still using it, hoping it will get better with time as some mascaras do!

I feel like I have had brushes like this one but the formula was way better for my lashes. It depends!
